Medical Theme Projects

In August 2008, the NKS administration initiated a number of medical research groups with the mission to work with future medical themes as an initial attempt to propose operational content in the New Karolinska Solna. This work is seen in the long-term with scenarios planned for the years 2015-2020.

The first results of this work formed the basis of the NKS operational content concept, which was decided by the County Council delegates in May 2010.

The purpose of this work was to define the overall care processes and care chains and to describe the New Karolinska Solna's cooperation with other caregivers. The work should help to enable greater collaboration between clinical operations, research, development and education.

There has been six theme groups (see below) and each group was led (part-time) by a theme leader, working clinically at Karolinska University Hospital.

The head physicians Annelie Liljegren, Erland Löfberg and Claes-Roland Martling are main project managers. Senior physicians Ronny Wikström and Jonas Berner has also been working with the project on an overall basis.

The following areas provide the basis for work with medical themes during 2015-2020, where patient numbers and flow are described:

• Optimal care for patients with trauma where the New Karolinska University Hospital is a center within the medical care system

• How research, development and training can best be pursued

• Emergency care and planned care as separate processes

• What share of the current care process is inpatient, day care or outpatient, and how it could be optimized

• Optimal interaction with other hospitals, both day care and on call

• Organization of health care within the New Karolinska University Hospital – interaction with other specialties as well as diagnostic imaging and physiology, intervention, surgery and intensive care.
